Is Christmas Creeping Up Too Fast?

MSNBC.com Is Christmas Creeping Up Too Fast? TheOmahaChannel.com OMAHA, Neb. - On the calendar, Halloween is followed by Thanksgiving and then Christmas, but in stores all over Omaha, Christmas has been here as long as a month already. Each year, Christmas merchandise hits the shelves a little earlier -- taking us from summer straight to the holiday season. Stores such as Lowe's and Wal-Mart have put up their Christmas displays over the last couple of weeks. Target and Shopko said Monday is the date for the move from Halloween to Christmas for them. For decades, Tannenbaum's in the Old Market has sold Christmas items year-round. That allows customers to get a very early jump on shopping during some less-busy times of the year. Store owner Jeff Jergensen said that no matter when you start shopping, the holiday seasons pretty much stay the same. "When Thanksgiving gets here, then they begin to get in the Christmas spirit just like they always did," Jergensen said. The stores aren't the only ones moving up the season. Each year, it seems, radio stations begin playing Christmas music earlier and earlier. Some economists said early Christmas sales are shrewd marketing, because as Christmas gets closer, family budgets will be more and more squeezed by rising fuel and home heating prices.
